Salt Cathedral Day Trip

Colombia's most-visited attraction. An underground cathedral carved into a salt mine at 180 meters depth. Here's how to do it from Bogota.

70,000 COP entry (~$17)Half-day trip50 km from Bogota

What to Expect

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is built inside an active salt mine. You descend 180 meters underground through 14 Stations of the Cross — each carved into the salt rock with dramatic lighting. The journey culminates in a massive underground nave with a 16-meter illuminated cross that genuinely takes your breath away.

The audio guide (included) adds valuable context about the Muisca indigenous people who originally mined here, the colonial-era salt extraction, and the engineering behind the cathedral. Budget 1.5-2 hours inside.

Pro Tip
Go early (before 11am) to avoid tour bus crowds. Weekday mornings are ideal.
Heads Up
It's cold underground (~14°C) — bring a jacket even if it's warm outside.
